# Drone vs Quadcopter: What are the Differences, Uses, and Examples?

So let’s dive into the detail !!

## What Is A Drone?

A drone is a remote-controlled aircraft that flies autonomously without human intervention. Drones use cameras and sensors to take pictures and videos of their surroundings and send back information to the controller.

You might ask yourself ‘how does a camera help me know what I’m doing?’ Here’s how! By using a drone, you don’t have to worry about getting stuck in the weeds, losing sight of your target, or being cut off by traffic while you’re taking a picture. That’s right – no need to get out of the car or pull over – just sit back and relax while your drone takes care of everything.

## What Is A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles)?

The UAV is a type of drone aircraft that is piloted remotely. There are various types of drones ranging from fixed-wing craft to multirotor vehicles.

These unmanned aerial vehicles have given rise to a whole industry of quadcopter enthusiasts who use them recreationally for photography, videography, real estate, and aerial mapping. Drone technology is set to become increasingly popular with businesses and consumers because of its many applications. It offers innovative ways to solve problems and make work easier.

### 1. Definition of a quadcopter

A quadcopter (also known as a quad) is a flying robot that looks like a small helicopter. In many cases, they are designed to carry cameras; hence their name. The first known unmanned aerial vehicle was developed in 1903 by Igor Sikorsky. He called his design the “Sikorsky-Burlak” (Russian for “Little Sparrowhawk”). Later, he renamed it the “Flying Wing Machine.” The Russian military adopted the machine for surveillance purposes, while civilian applications followed shortly afterward. Since then, quadcopters have been used by hobbyists. There are commercial versions on the market now that allow anyone with a computer and a few dollars to purchase them.

### 2. History of a quadcopter

The history of quadcopters begins with Igor Sikorsky. His design was originally built in 1903 and was later modified in 1916. While working for the United States Army Signal Corps, he created the “United States Aerial Torpedo” which could be remotely controlled and carried a torpedo weighing over 100 pounds. These were used by the U.S. Navy for anti-submarine warfare. In the 1930s, the Germans began using similar technology. They called theirs the “Knickebein Rotorcycle.” Both of these machines were very successful. The Germans even used the Knickebein rotorcycle in World War II. After the war ended, the Americans took control of the aircraft, and soon after that, started mass production. Since then, quadcopters have become increasingly popular.

### 3. Uses of a quadcopter

As stated earlier, quadcopters can be used for both recreational and business purposes. One of the best uses of a quadcopter is for fun. You can use them for photography, capturing videos, or simply exploring. Businesses have been using them as well. When dealing with construction projects, they can be used to capture footage of buildings, bridges, and other structures. They can also be used as monitoring devices. Companies commonly use them to monitor pipelines, power lines, and roads. They can also be useful in agriculture. Farmers can use them to check crops for any problems. If a problem arises, the farmer can then notify the appropriate authorities. They can also be helpful in search and rescue operations. As mentioned before, they can be used for surveillance. Police forces across the world have used them. The Israeli army even has its own version.

### 4. Types of a quadcopter

There are two types of quadcopters: fixed wing and multirotor. Fixed wing quadcopters have four rotors attached to four wings. Each blade rotates independently and generates lift. However, they only move forward due to the rotation of each rotor. Multirotor quads do not have blades. Instead, they have three or more propellers that spin to generate thrust. As a result, they move forward, backward, and sideways. They do not require external wind to keep going.

### 5. Maintenance

Quadcopters are meant to be simple. Many people who own them say that they don’t need much maintenance. Most models have batteries that last anywhere from five to ten minutes. As long as they are not exposed to harsh weather conditions or water, they should last just fine. All of the parts are replaceable, though. You can find replacement motors at almost any store. Batteries are pretty cheap too. To avoid losing control in midair, you may want to install sensors to ensure a safe flight. Sensors can help you detect obstacles, landings, and other issues.

## What Is The Difference Between A Quadcopter And A Drone?

The difference between quadcopter and drone is quite simple. A quadcopter (also known as quad) is a remote-controlled aircraft that consists of four rotating propellers attached to a central body called a fuselage. The quadcopter’s rotors create lift, allowing them to take off and land vertically.

Meanwhile, drones sometimes referred to as multicopters, fly using only two or even just one rotors. Drones are often cheaper, easier to use, and smaller than their multi-rotor counterparts. However, they have less maneuverability and cannot hover as well.

While both quadcopters and drones operate similarly, there are some distinct differences between them. Unlike drones, quadcopters can carry heavier loads. They are also capable of flying at much higher altitudes than drones. Additionally, they tend to be faster than traditional drones due to their larger size. Most quadcopters have similar features to drones, making them suitable for commercial applications.

## Types Of Drones

### There are various types of drones nowadays:

A quadcopter is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), meaning it’s operated by remote control via a wireless connection. Essentially, it’s an RC plane without a pilot! These drones are popular for photography and videography due to their steady, precise movements; they’re often flown at low altitudes using GPS positioning.

### 2. Hexacopter drone

Hexacopters aren’t quite as popular as quadcopters, but they offer a lot of the same features for a much cheaper price. You’ll notice that hexacopters have three rotor blades instead of four, giving them less stability than a quadcopter. Also, since they don’t have a built-in flight controller, it’s up to the user to program each movement individually. But what makes a hexacopter unique is its 6 rotors, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

### 3. Octocopter drone

Octocopters are even smaller than hexacopters, offering a similar flight time while being just as stable. The name comes from 8-rotor technology, although some octocopters have only 4 rotors. Like hexacopters, these small flying machines lack a flight controller and require programming. Just be sure to use a safe operating range and good weather conditions if you plan on using one indoors.

### 4. Microdrone drone

Microdrones are the smallest UAVs, comparable in size and weight to a smartphone. They are ideal for shooting high-resolution videos up close and personal, whether it be from a bird’s eye view or down below. Since micro drones fly around 300 feet off of the ground, you won’t get any wind noise, making them perfect for recording video interviews.

### 5. Remote-controlled helicopter

In recent years, many hobbyists have started building their own helicopters out of parts found in toy store aisles. There are two types of RC helicopters: fixed pitch and variable pitch. Both work pretty similarly and are powered by a motor connected to a propeller. Unlike a model aircraft, which may weigh over 50 pounds, a fully functional RC helicopter shouldn’t exceed 5 pounds.

### 7. Aerial Photography & Videography Drones

In addition to using a drone for photography/videography, hobbyists can build their own with kits like the DJI Inspire 1. This kit comes with everything you need to begin aerial photography or videography including a gimbal stabilizer, battery pack, and transmitter.

### 8. Under-water Drone

Under-Water Drone, also known as UWD, is a drone that can fly underwater. It is able to dive down to depths of 30 meters / 100 feet, and travel at speeds of up to 35 Km/h (22 mph). It’s currently the only consumer-grade underwater drone on the market. The drone comes equipped with advanced sensors, including sonar, infrared camera, GPS locator, and air pressure sensor. UWD can carry payloads weighing up to 6 kg / 13.2 pounds.

### 1. DJI

DJI has been making drones for quite some time now, but they’re getting really popular recently. Their products range from beginner’s drones to professional-grade ones. A good drone brand should have a wide variety of drones at different price points.

### 2. Parrot

Parrot makes consumer drones that are fun to fly. In fact, their drones actually have a pretty high rate of success, even if you’re just starting out. The drones can be purchased online or in stores like Best Buy.

Yuneec makes a ton of different drones, but their flagship model is the Typhoon H quadcopter. If you’re looking for a drone that can shoot 4K videos, this is the best drone for you! The quadcopter costs about $2,000. ### 4. 3D Robotics This company makes very small drones that fit in the palm of your hand. But don’t let its size fool you; these tiny drones can still work great! ### 5. GoPro GoPro is well-known for its cameras, but they make drones as well. GoPros costs between$200-$600 dollars depending on the quality. ### 6. Blade Blade only manufactures drones for people who want a little bit of extra performance. These drones tend to be slightly more expensive than others, but you get what you pay for. ### 7. TBS TBS is a relatively newer company compared to the rest, but they’ve got some cool drones. Their drones also happen to be super affordable! ## Benefits Of Quadcopter The Benefits of Quadcopter drones are vast and many. Here we have compiled some of the best drone benefits that you need to know about. ### 1. The Drone Helps You To Be In A Position To See More Than Your Competitor When you’re using a drone, you’ll have the same view as if you were sitting right in front of the subject. So, if you want to get closer to your subject, then you should use a drone. ### 2. The Drone Helps In The Field Operations You might need to perform several tasks simultaneously while taking pictures or shooting videos. If you’re trying to capture something in motion, then you’ll obviously need a drone. ### 3. It Is Easy To Fly If you don’t feel comfortable flying a drone, then you shouldn’t own one. Drones aren’t exactly easy to fly; however, they are easier than traditional cameras. Moreover, you can learn how to operate them within minutes. ### 4. There Are No Restrictions On Flying Them There are no restrictions on the operation of drones in any country. However, you are restricted from flying them at night time or over people and buildings. ### 5. You Can Use Several Different Types Of Cameras For example, you can use different types of cameras including video and still cameras. When you use a drone, you won’t need to worry about getting close to your subjects. ### 6. It Is Simple To Carry Drones weigh less than 100 grams and don’t require batteries or wires. Also, you can carry them easily in just one hand. You don’t need any special training to operate a quadcopter. It’s very easy to use and fun too. ## Why Quadcopters Are So Popular? Quadrotors are small drones that use four propellers instead of two. Quadcopters are becoming increasingly popular due to their affordability and ease of operation. In fact, they can be flown effectively even by beginners. Some core points about why quadcopters are so popular: ### 1. Easy Operation Quadcopters are generally easier to operate than traditional RC helicopters. They have less parts and complexity so they are easier to assemble and fly. Also, quadcopters require no special skills to build and use, unlike conventional RC helicopters where pilots need to know how to drive them and how to maintain them. In fact, quadcopters are often considered easier to fly than traditional RC helicopters. ### 2. Low Cost You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars buying quadcopter kits and spare parts. This makes quadcopters a great choice for people who want to start flying drones but have tight budgets. ### 3. Versatile A quadcopter is versatile. You can use it for taking pictures, video recording, filming sports events, delivering goods, and many other applications. It’s suitable for almost any purpose. ### 4. Fun To Fly Flying a drone can be fun. There are several models that allow you to fly them indoors and out. Moreover, if you own a cheap model, you’ll be able to fly it all day long without running out of batteries. ### 5. High-Quality Video And Images With quadcopters, you can record high-quality videos and images. A drone equipped with a camera can take stunning aerial shots; these images are always clear and detailed. ### 6. Safety Is Paramount Unlike traditional RC aircraft, quadcopters do not pose a risk of crashing into objects and causing damage. They are much safer since they cannot crash into anything. If something goes wrong, the drone just stops and lands safely. ### 7. Reliable Service The best thing about quadcopters is their reliability. Drone manufacturers produce durable products that can last years. Even if issues arise, you can easily fix them yourself. ## Common Q & A: ## What Is A Hexacopter? A hexacopter is a type of multirotor aircraft designed to operate at high speeds and low altitudes using powerful engines. The design was initially developed by engineers working for NASA in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The first prototype was built and flown by Dave Hall and Steve Fossett in 1985. More advanced prototypes were built in the 1990s, leading to the first production models being sold commercially around 2000. Hexacopters have six rotors as opposed to two in conventional helicopters. Each rotor produces lift, but not in the same way as fixed-wing aircraft. Unlike a helicopter, each rotor does not generate forward thrust; instead, they produce torque, which causes the entire vehicle to rotate about its center of mass, thereby increasing airspeed. ## Advantages Of Using A Hexacopter Flight Speed: Compared to traditional helicopters, which can only fly at relatively slow speeds due to their single propeller, hexacopters have greater flight speeds. In fact, some can reach speeds exceeding 300 miles per hour (480 km/h). Stability: Because the flight direction of a hexacopter is controlled by turning the vehicle rather than moving forward, stability is much higher than that of typical helicopters. Most models are stable enough to hover without external aids. Maneuverability: Because the lifting power comes from a combination of three rotors, maneuverability is much improved compared to a conventional helicopter. Maneuvering maneuvers are possible even while hovering. ## Disadvantages Of Using A Hexcopter Noise Level: Because they produce noise, people tend to avoid flying them near residential areas. That said, many models are designed to produce less noise while still retaining the fast speeds and agility of traditional helicopters. Cost: Compared to helicopters, which cost thousands of dollars and require months of training to learn how to fly, hexacopters offer a lower price point, making them more accessible to hobbyists. However, costs do increase considerably as the size of the craft increases. Weight: While the weight of a hexacopter may seem similar to that of a helicopter, the additional components add significantly to the total payload capacity. As a result, heavier payloads are best suited for lighter models. ## What Is An Octocopter? Octo- means eight; octa- means eight; Octo- means eight, octocarrier- means eight cars. A single octocopter drone carries one person and two cameras. They are suitable for aerial filming, photography, surveying, and mapping. Octocopters are multi-rotor helicopters created to carry out tasks where other aircraft would not work. One of these operations includes aerial photography. Octocopters have been designed to take off and land vertically, similar to small airplanes. Octocopters are built with propellers mounted on each wing section; they use four rotors to provide lift and maneuverability. These octocopters have a high degree of control over their flight path, and some can fly at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. The first octocopters were produced in 2003, and are currently in operation as of 2014. Octocopters cost about$200,000 to produce. The price tag may go down if mass production occurs, as well as if the technology advances. The U.S. military uses them for surveillance purposes, but they are commonly employed by private companies and hobbyists alike.

A quadcopter is a multirotor craft capable of hovering and moving vertically in any direction, much like a helicopter, along with forward and backward motion in the horizontal plane. A typical quadcopter consists of four rotors and two counter-rotating propellers. Each rotor turns at its own speed, giving the craft stability.

### 2. Hexacopter

A hexacopter is a combination of a quadrocopter and a hexarotor. Hexacopters have six rotors, which provide lift in three dimensions. They move through coordinated maneuvers, similar to those performed by fixed-wing aircraft.

### 2. Helicopters

A helicopter is a flying machine that propels through the air by means of a rotating group of blades attached to the front end called the hub. The hub is powered by a single or dual engine(s). Helicopters differ from airplanes because the blades spin clockwise or counterclockwise.

## Difference Between Drones And UAV

In the world of drones, there are many different types of drones. A drone may look similar to a regular airplane; however, they have some major differences. One of the biggest differences between these two flying machines is that drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) while airplanes are piloted by human pilots.

Another difference is that drones have three major parts: the body, the engine, and the propeller. While an airplane has only one major section, a drone has three. There are many different ways to classify drones according to their purposes. Let’s take a closer look at these different types of drones.

Drones Types & Applications

The quadcopter is a type of drone that is considered to be the simplest UAV model. It has four rotors that fly around the plane together. Most quadcopter models are used for recreational purposes. Due to its small size and low cost, it is commonly used by hobbyists.

The first ever remotely controlled aircraft, the Russian-designed “Igor Sikorsky Ilya Muromets” was a quadcopter helicopter. It was officially flown for the first time on July 14th, 1926. By the end of the year, Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky had developed his own version of the quadcopter.

His design became known as the “Sikorsky S-64”, which eventually became the famous “Rochester”. Other popular quadcopters include the DJI Phantom series and the Parrot AR Drone 2.0. These drone models have become very popular due to their high quality and affordability. It is capable of producing very good results.

### 2. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

An unmanned aerial vehicle is a type of drone that is powered by engines and has no pilot onboard. It is also known as an autonomous drone, remote control plane, or unmanned aerial system. UAVs are mainly used for military and commercial applications. In the field of agriculture, it is used to detect weeds, map out the land, measure crops, and perform various other tasks.

As technology advances and prices continue to drop, more businesses are turning to the use of unmanned aerial systems. An example of a UAV is the Predator. It is a predator drone. Predators are used primarily for surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition. Its primary uses are in law enforcement, border security, intelligence gathering, search and rescue operations, counter-terrorism, and firefighting. It is able to capture images, send back real-time video, and transmit live footage to operators who monitor them via satellite links.

In addition to the Predator, there are numerous other drones that are being used in the agricultural industry. Examples include the SkyWatch, Kestrel, and ScanEagle. There are even drones that are specifically designed for the agricultural sector. The Agile Hawk is one such model.

The first thing I did was find some good-looking images on Google Images and then print them out. Then I had my wife cut off the corners and glued each image onto four 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of cardstock. After that, I took two pieces of brown paper towels and folded them in half, taped them together at the center fold, and then folded them again in half. Next, I took a square piece of cardboard and covered the entire surface with a black Sharpie marker. Now I started adding detail to each picture.

I drew the quadcopter frame using the same pencil drawing I used earlier. Then I colored in the frame using some yellow chalk pastels. I added some shadowing around the bottom left cylinder using a blue pencil. To make the top left propeller easier I just drew straight lines where they should go. I painted over the lines with white acrylic paint. The lower right propeller was drawn out first followed by its shadowing. Once done I just smeared around the edges with the edge of the pastel. When I finished painting my props I took a couple of pictures of the prop planes without any people in them just to get practice. You may notice that the propellers aren’t perfectly symmetrical. That’s because I didn’t want the whole thing to look perfect.

After I got the props finished I started on the frame. First I marked out the front of the frame using a black sharpie. Then I traced along the top and bottom marks with a red sharpie. Next, I used a chisel to carve out some wood around the top and bottom marks. Then I used sandpaper to smooth everything down. Finally, I stained the whole thing using dark walnut stain. After that, I took a small brush and filled the inside of the frame with a light walnut stain.

Let me know what you think!

## How Do Drones Rotate

According to Jeevan Chockalingam,

Drone rotors rotate due to two different reasons – either the rotor blades move around the hub or the hub moves around the axis. In both cases, rotation happens due to angular momentum.

In order to understand how the rotor turns around its center, first, we need to know about angular momentum. Angular momentum (L) is a vector quantity representing the amount of spin in a body. Because spinning bodies generate torque, they have L. Torque (T) is a force acting at a right angle to the line joining a point on the object to the pivot point of the lever arm. When T is applied to an object increases, the angular velocity increases, and vice versa.

If the rotor blade is attached to the hub at some distance away from the axis of rotation, then it will experience centrifugal force. Centrifugal force is a result of centripetal acceleration. If a circular path is created around the central axis, the net force exerted on any object moving along that path would be always directed towards the center of the circle. Acceleration due to centripetal force is called centripetal acceleration or radial acceleration. As the radius R of the circle decreases, the acceleration due to centripetal force becomes greater.

Since the centrifugal force is proportional to the square of the speed v, and the radially outward acceleration due to centripetal force is proportional to the speed v, therefore the resultant force F m*a, where m is the mass of the rotating object and a is the magnitude of the acceleration. So, if the radius r is small enough, then the resultant force tends to make the object fall off the circle. This is known as centrifugal force or Coriolis force.

The motion of the rotor blades attached to the hub can be explained in terms of the conservation of angular momentum. Let’s say x represents the position of the rotor blades, y represents the angle between the plane formed by the x and y axes, and the Z axis and z axis represent the axis of rotation. Then the total kinetic energy Knot of the whole system is given by the equation below.

Kinetic Energy Ktot 1/2 * M * V^2 1/2 * I * w^2 1/8 * M * w^2 * sin(2x + 2y + 2z)^2

Where M is the mass of the rotor blades, V is the linear velocity, I is the inertia moment of the rotor blades and w is the angular velocity. If the rotor blades are free to move around their axis of rotation, then the equation reduces to the equation below.

$\frac{1}{2}Iw^2$ $1/8$Mw^2sin^2(2x+2y+2z)

Since the rotor blades are free, the equation further simplifies to the equation below. $\frac {1}{2}I_{eff}w^2$ $\frac{1}{8}$Mw^2 cos^2(2x)

Equation 8 shows that the effective inertia moment I eff of the rotor blades is half of the actual inertia moment. Thus, the effective angular velocity of the rotor blades can be calculated using the equation below.

## What Is VR Drone?

VR drone is a new generation drone with high-precision aerial photography and video shooting function. It adopts advanced technology and features, such as an auto-focus lens, intelligent flight control system, smart image processing software, and high definition camera.

VR Drone was introduced in 2018 and is a revolutionary drone technology that allows users to experience their surroundings virtually. Users can view 360-degree videos, take pictures, and interact with virtual objects. You no longer need to be confined to the area around where you live; now, you can travel anywhere in the world!

Parts list of making a quadcopter by yourself:

1. Drone Frame

The drone frame is made from aluminum tubing cut down into 4-foot sections. I purchased a set of four 8′ lengths at my local hardware store. You’ll need two screws (or nails) per section plus a 1/8″ pilot drill bit.

2. Motors

I chose the motors from eBay, specifically the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 FPV quadcopter kit with a 5200Kv Brushless Motor. I went with brushed motors because they have less maintenance than brushless ones. The motors were $90 shipped. 3. ESC I ordered an ESC online, specifically the BEC Solar Charger Dual 12S 1000W LiPo Battery charger. This was about$70 shipped.

4. Camera

My camera is a GoPro Hero 2 Silver. I bought it for under $250, including tax. If you don’t want to spend as much on your own camera, you can order a drone with a built-in camera. Many drones sold today have cameras! 5. Gimbal A gimbal is a device that holds the camera steady while shooting video. They’re commonly used when shooting aerial shots and are often included with some higher-end drones. My gimbal came with the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ which cost around$500.

6. Drone Prop & Controller

These props are optional extras but help stabilize the quadcopter in flight. The two props I got were $10 each. I chose them because they looked nice and were relatively thick. 7. GPS Receiver This receiver helps the quadcopter know where its location is in relation to known landmarks. It’s needed if you plan on using obstacle avoidance software or mapping applications. This particular model is called the Skycontroller V2 which costs around$30 shipped.
