How To Design Quadcopter

The first thing I did was find some good-looking images on Google Images and then print them out. Then I had my wife cut off the corners and glued each image onto four 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of cardstock. After that, I took two pieces of brown paper towels and folded them in half, taped them together at the center fold, and then folded them again in half. Next, I took a square piece of cardboard and covered the entire surface with a black Sharpie marker. Now I started adding detail to each picture.

I drew the quadcopter frame using the same pencil drawing I used earlier. Then I colored in the frame using some yellow chalk pastels. I added some shadowing around the bottom left cylinder using a blue pencil. To make the top left propeller easier I just drew straight lines where they should go. I painted over the lines with white acrylic paint. The lower right propeller was drawn out first followed by its shadowing. Once done I just smeared around the edges with the edge of the pastel. When I finished painting my props I took a couple of pictures of the prop planes without any people in them just to get practice. You may notice that the propellers aren’t perfectly symmetrical. That’s because I didn’t want the whole thing to look perfect.

After I got the props finished I started on the frame. First I marked out the front of the frame using a black sharpie. Then I traced along the top and bottom marks with a red sharpie. Next, I used a chisel to carve out some wood around the top and bottom marks. Then I used sandpaper to smooth everything down. Finally, I stained the whole thing using dark walnut stain. After that, I took a small brush and filled the inside of the frame with a light walnut stain.

How Do Drones Rotate

Drone rotors rotate due to two different reasons – either the rotor blades move around the hub or the hub moves around the axis. In both cases, rotation happens due to angular momentum.

In order to understand how the rotor turns around its center, first, we need to know about angular momentum. Angular momentum (L) is a vector quantity representing the amount of spin in a body. Because spinning bodies generate torque, they have L. Torque (T) is a force acting at a right angle to the line joining a point on the object to the pivot point of the lever arm. When T is applied to an object increases, the angular velocity increases, and vice versa.

If the rotor blade is attached to the hub at some distance away from the axis of rotation, then it will experience centrifugal force. Centrifugal force is a result of centripetal acceleration. If a circular path is created around the central axis, the net force exerted on any object moving along that path would be always directed towards the center of the circle. Acceleration due to centripetal force is called centripetal acceleration or radial acceleration. As the radius R of the circle decreases, the acceleration due to centripetal force becomes greater.

Since the centrifugal force is proportional to the square of the speed v, and the radially outward acceleration due to centripetal force is proportional to the speed v, therefore the resultant force F m*a, where m is the mass of the rotating object and a is the magnitude of the acceleration. So, if the radius r is small enough, then the resultant force tends to make the object fall off the circle. This is known as centrifugal force or Coriolis force.

The motion of the rotor blades attached to the hub can be explained in terms of the conservation of angular momentum. Let’s say x represents the position of the rotor blades, y represents the angle between the plane formed by the x and y axes, and the Z axis and z axis represent the axis of rotation. Then the total kinetic energy Knot of the whole system is given by the equation below.

Where M is the mass of the rotor blades, V is the linear velocity, I is the inertia moment of the rotor blades and w is the angular velocity. If the rotor blades are free to move around their axis of rotation, then the equation reduces to the equation below.

Parts list of making a quadcopter by yourself:

1. Drone Frame

The drone frame is made from aluminum tubing cut down into 4-foot sections. I purchased a set of four 8′ lengths at my local hardware store. You’ll need two screws (or nails) per section plus a 1/8″ pilot drill bit.

2. Motors

I chose the motors from eBay, specifically the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 FPV quadcopter kit with a 5200Kv Brushless Motor. I went with brushed motors because they have less maintenance than brushless ones. The motors were $90 shipped.

3. ESC

I ordered an ESC online, specifically the BEC Solar Charger Dual 12S 1000W LiPo Battery charger. This was about $70 shipped.

4. Camera

My camera is a GoPro Hero 2 Silver. I bought it for under $250, including tax. If you don’t want to spend as much on your own camera, you can order a drone with a built-in camera. Many drones sold today have cameras!

5. Gimbal

A gimbal is a device that holds the camera steady while shooting video. They’re commonly used when shooting aerial shots and are often included with some higher-end drones. My gimbal came with the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ which cost around $500.

6. Drone Prop & Controller

These props are optional extras but help stabilize the quadcopter in flight. The two props I got were $10 each. I chose them because they looked nice and were relatively thick.

7. GPS Receiver

This receiver helps the quadcopter know where its location is in relation to known landmarks. It’s needed if you plan on using obstacle avoidance software or mapping applications. This particular model is called the Skycontroller V2 which costs around $30 shipped.
